What changed, version by version

The app updates itself. This is what each update brought.

1.0.0latest

1.0: show me, a Buddy that talks, and meetings that follow through

It is free, and everything it does for you today stays free: no account, no ads, and no paywall on any feature you have used.

New

  • Show me: ask Buddy "show me where to change the font" and a ring lands on the real control. On our 30 test tasks it pointed at the right control 15 of 15 times in each of three runs, with no wrong points.
  • Buddy can talk with you (on laptop speakers it takes turns), keep several chats on your Mac, answer about part of your screen, read a whole document, read its answer back, and rehearse a talk with you in private.
  • Meetings: call capture rules and a consent record, the call's echo taken out of your microphone, files dropped in from Finder, notes built around the moments you mark, versions of the notes, find and replace, tags, and a Markdown folder that stays in step both ways.
  • One field on command-K finds meetings, people, notes, dictations and settings.
  • Pick a mode while still listening, say a word to look it up in your words, fill in a snippet's blanks as you paste it, type several languages in order, and let pauses never cut a dictation off.
  • Incognito keeps nothing and learns nothing. A note or meeting can be locked with Touch ID. You can click by voice.
  • Pick a face or bring your own, with sounds and Dock icons to choose, a card for your month, a speed test, and marks for real use that never punish a missed day.
  • A command line and a local developer API.

Better

  • Every model on your Mac is listed with its size and can be removed from inside the app, and every model size has a measured memory and speed budget.
  • The app at rest wakes 12 times a second where it woke 150.
  • Nothing that passed in 0.4.0 fails now.

Coming

  • Syncing your devices and hosted share links will be free. No server runs for them yet, so nothing leaves your Mac.
0.4.0

Fixing by voice, and long dictations that finish faster

New

  • Say "scratch that", fix text by voice, add a word by saying it, or ask "what can I say here".
  • Hindi, Urdu and the other Indic languages come out in their own script or in Latin letters, whichever you choose.
  • Modes keep a style for each app.
  • A second dictation can start while the last one is being cleaned. They paste in the order you said them.
  • Calm live words, if you turn them on: at most 3 words move per update, where up to 56 moved before.
  • The Scratchpad can check a spoken answer against your lecture, and keeps a receipt of how a note was written.

Better

  • On our own test of what you meant against what got typed, 45.6% of items are now typed exactly as meant, up from 44.9%.
  • A dictation an hour long is pasted 1.6 seconds after you let go, where it took 3.8 seconds.
  • On Macs with 8 GB, the light cleanup has its own trained model: 275 of 577 dev items typed as meant, against 270.
  • Say an emoji by name and it's typed. Caps and spacing work by voice, and each language gets its own punctuation.
0.3.4

Dates, times and money, written right

Better

  • "On the twenty eighth" is on the 28th, "two to six" is 2 to 6, and "meet at twelve forty five" is 12:45.
  • "Room four twelve" is room 412, and "bake at three fifty" is 350.
  • Money you talk about gets its sign: "I paid forty for the pizzas, twenty each" is $40 and $20 each, with £, € or ₹ where that is your Mac's currency.
  • A correction said as its own sentence is taken: "due on the thirtieth. Please correct that. It's the thirty first." is the 31st.
  • With More languages on, English is checked for its language half as often, and the check is two to three times faster. Ticking your languages in Settings skips it.
0.3.3

Numbers, the way you'd write them

Better

  • "A hundred fifty dollars" is $150, "fifteen to eighteen thousand dollars" is $15,000 to $18,000.
  • "November fifteenth at two PM" is November 15th at 2 PM.
  • "Room two oh four" is room 204, and a phone number said digit by digit is written as one.

Fixed

  • A right figure the cleanup wrote ("eight grand" as 8,000) is no longer undone.
  • A phone number with a digit missing is never typed.
0.3.2

The cleanup model, a step further

Better

  • More corrections come out right, and nothing the cleanup got right before is lost.
  • Numbers said one digit at a time ("two oh four Harbor Lane") and decimals said in words ("two point three million") are typed as figures.
  • Macs running the balanced model get the trained cleanup's improvements too. The new model downloads by itself (66 MB) after the update.
0.3.1

A better cleanup model

Better

  • The cleanup model keeps the reason you give after a correction ("Friday, because Sarah is out") and drops only the talk about the slip ("sorry, that's what I meant").
  • More rambles and mid-sentence corrections come out right, and nothing it got right before is lost. It downloads by itself (66 MB) after the update.
  • A name of several words that you said right keeps its capitals.

Fixed

  • A phone request the app refused just before quitting is always counted in the privacy meter.
0.3.0

Learn my words

New

  • Turn on learn my words in the dictionary, and the names and spellings you fix are learned on your Mac, so they come out right the next time.
  • Nothing is uploaded, only the words themselves are kept, each one can be removed, and turning it off deletes them.
0.2.0

A new look

What floats over your apps is Liquid Glass; what you read is crisp.

New

  • The bar, its cards, Buddy and a live meeting are Liquid Glass, with a finer wave on the bar.
  • White pages under the system sidebar, one main button per row and the rest in a "…" menu.
  • A meeting's seven buttons are now share and a menu; a live meeting has pause, a menu and stop.
  • Keys show as key caps, and Buddy's send turns blue when there is something to send.
0.1.10

Corrections, applied cleanly

Fixed

  • "Two modules. Three modules is what I meant." types "three modules", never "three modules modules".
  • "To the, what am I saying, to the settings page" replaces what you said before it, and the "sorry, no" that led into it goes too.
0.1.9

Names of the world, and Granola's best ideas

New

  • About 800,000 famous names are recognized: athletes, artists, creators, companies, places and medicines. A misheard one is fixed when the audio confirms it.
  • Meetings: your typed notes steer the summary, note templates, folders, people and company pages, and saved questions.
  • During a call, Buddy can suggest what to say, help answer the question just asked, or define a term.

Better

  • The “hide from screen sharing” setting now covers every window of the app, Settings and the Scratchpad included. It is the standard macOS setting: screen shares and recordings leave those windows out, though some capture tools can still show them.
  • Medicines stay lower case mid-sentence, and a name the cleanup corrected (Jupyter, not Jupiter) stays corrected.
0.1.8

A security update

Fixed

  • Updates are checked more strictly: the update list itself is signed, and a tampered download is refused before anything is opened.
  • Password and passkey windows are never read, and card numbers and one-time codes are never passed on.
  • Email cards always use the address in your Contacts.
  • A phishing email on screen is called out, never listed as a step.
  • Delete everything also removes connected-app tokens.
0.1.7

Names, spelled right

Fixed

  • Wispr Flow, HeyClicky, Superwhisper, MacWhisper, Aqua Voice and Granola are spelled right, also when the words run together.
  • A name the app knows is never changed by the cleanup.
  • "No shortcuts" no longer comes out as "no short cause".
0.1.6

A modern look

New

  • The floating bar is real Liquid Glass.
  • Settings uses flat white cards with more room to breathe.
  • Bubbles are soft and flat, like Messages. No more shiny strips, outlines or dotted background.
0.1.5

The way you actually talk

Better

  • Slang stays the way you said it: lowkey, situationship, a huge W.
  • In chats, abbreviations come out the way you'd type them: idk, fr, rn.
  • Say an emoji by name and it's typed: skull emoji becomes 💀.
  • An email to a professor gets tidied without sounding stiff.
  • Slang the speech model used to mishear, like highkey, delulu and vibe check, comes out right more often.
0.1.4

Names, heard right

Better

  • Names on your screen, in your dictionary and in your contacts are listened for while you talk, and fix a word only where the speech model wasn't sure.
  • Errors on names and numbers fell from 24% to 20% in our tests.
0.1.3

Words that sound alike, typed as meant

Better

  • His genes, not his jeans: about 200 sound-alike pairs are chosen by what the sentence means.
  • Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese come out much cleaner: fillers go, corrections apply, punctuation said aloud works.

Fixed

  • The live meeting window shows every bubble whole and opens on the newest words.
0.1.2

Seven languages, and better ones

New

  • The app in Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese and Chinese.
  • Persian, Hungarian, Danish and Azerbaijani are now good, with a larger speech model offered only if you pick them.

Fixed

  • Spoken years are typed as digits: 2021, not twenty twenty one.
  • Money ranges keep their hyphen.
  • A short lecture with slides gets its study notes.
  • The privacy meter counts a download cut off by quitting.
0.1.1

The new name everywhere

Fixed

  • Finder, Spotlight, Launchpad and the Dock show the new name.
  • Downloads moved to the renamed GitHub repository. Old links keep working.
0.1.0

The first public version

A new name, and the number starts over: 0.1.0 follows 0.7.12.

New

  • Buddy answers only from what it can see, and starts answering in about half a second.
  • Dictation runs at full speed while you work in another app, Low Power Mode included.
  • Letters you spell out become the word: D O C X is DOCX.
  • "Don't say that" and "forget that whole thing" remove what came before.
  • A short first-run window for new installs.

Fixed

  • Typing into the current ChatGPT app, web editors and VS Code, with undo.
  • A restarted device no longer overwrites newer edits from your other devices.
0.7.1early build

A card that minds its own keys

Fixed

  • The card that offers to copy or insert a dictation no longer takes Return or ⌘C away from the app you're typing in.

The privacy meter, uploads with speakers, and your other AI apps

Eight strands of work in one release: privacy you can check, more ways in for meetings, and faster, more careful cleanup.

New

  • Privacy meter: a list of the connections the app makes, with where each went and how big it was.
  • Local mode: one switch that blocks the internet for the app, update checks included.
  • Upload a recording or a video to Meetings and get a transcript with speakers told apart. WebM and MKV recordings work too.
  • Connect Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other AI apps in one click so they can look things up in your meetings and notes.
  • Speak another language, type English: choose the languages you speak and dictation in them comes out in English.
  • Say “respond to this email and say…” and the reply to the message on screen is drafted in the reply box.
  • Every global shortcut can be changed or turned off, and a clash offers another key.
  • History is grouped by day, can be paused, and lets you flag a dictation that came out wrong.
  • Corrected words can be learned into your dictionary, with an undo.

Better

  • Cleanup rewords less: a check puts back words the model dropped, added or changed.
  • Spoken punctuation in five more languages, and no dashes unless you say “dash”.
  • “Export all my data” and “Delete everything” now cover notes, meetings, memories, the dictionary and kept audio as well as history.
  • The dictation bar has a stop button and can be dragged where you want it.

Fixed

  • A paste that didn't land goes to a card you can copy from instead of vanishing.
  • History and kept-audio limits are enforced while the app runs, not only when it starts.
  • One voice on the far side of a call stays one speaker.
0.6.0early build

Meetings grow up

New

  • A calendar view for meetings: the week ahead, reminders, join or record, and notes to read before a call.
  • Ask about a meeting and get answers with sources: a number in brackets opens the transcript at that moment.
  • Several voices on one microphone are told apart as Speaker 1, Speaker 2.
  • Recording can stop by itself when the call ends or the room goes quiet, and warns before the time limit.
  • Automatic recording counts down ten seconds first, so you can tell people or cancel.
  • Delete everything from the Privacy page.
  • Switches decide whether connected AI apps can see your dictation history and meeting notes.

Better

  • More filler words are caught, spoken numbers become digits, and short lists are numbered.
  • Text is never pasted into something that isn't a text field, and a dictation survives a crash.
  • A recording a crash interrupted can still be turned into notes.

The meeting notetaker, Scratchpad and a new look

New

  • Meetings: record a call's audio and your microphone with nothing joining the call, follow a live transcript, and get a summary with decisions and action items.
  • Scratchpad: a notes window you can dictate into.
  • A connection so Claude can search your notes, dictations and meetings on your Mac.
  • Transforms: give a rewrite such as Polish its own shortcut and review the result before it replaces your text.
  • Dictations up to 20 minutes, three cleanup levels, and “first, second, third” written as a numbered list.
  • The new look: a dotted desktop, small glass windows, and a face in the menu bar that talks while you talk.
0.4.0early build

Names from the screen, coding mode and 99 languages

New

  • Names in the window you're dictating into are spelled the way they appear there.
  • Coding mode for terminals and editors: say “camel case user id” and get userId.
  • Speaker labels when a recording has more than one voice.
  • Dictate from an iPhone through your Mac, using Apple's Shortcuts.
  • More languages: an optional download adds 74 languages to the 25 the app already detects.
0.3.2early build

Updates that install themselves

Better

  • Updates are downloaded in the background and installed at a quiet moment, never while you're dictating.
0.3.0early build

One key does more, 25 languages and your own words

New

  • Select text and say how to change it, or select a message you received and say what to answer.
  • Undo the last dictation, or paste it again somewhere else.
  • 25 languages are detected automatically and cleaned up in the language you spoke, never translated.
  • A built-in list of about 2,400 brands, apps and terms, plus your contacts' names and spellings you correct, so they come out right.
  • Share your word list with a teammate through a folder you both have.
  • Quiet speech is boosted, so whispering works.
  • Turn a voice memo or a recording into text.
0.2.6early build

Formatting for where you are

New

  • Text is formatted for the app or site you're in: an email layout in mail, chat style in messages.
  • “Match my writing” picks up how you type in each app and writes the same way.
  • A dictation that's already clean skips the cleanup model and is pasted sooner.
